Default Question about tomes

I've spent 30-45 mins in kamadan spamming WTB Rit & Monk Tomes(non elite). What did I get? 9-10 replyes with 1,5k-2k each. WTH, Is it me or some ppl are completely stupid. Why would I buy for so much? Just because I don't lose a skill point still doesn't make it worth it. So could anyone please explain, are tomes really worth that much?

Monk and ritualist tomes are the most sought after in the game, and the hardest to get.

So, in a word, yes - they are worth more than 1K. Many people use those tomes on their new characters, to give them access to skills that they would normally not have access to.

The point of Tomes is not to save skill points for your current character. Instead, it's for getting skills for other characters.
To explain - say you have a lvl 20 character who's been all through the game/chapter/whatever. You decide to start a new character of a different type and you'd like to use such&such skill that you can only get later in the game. So, you get your lvl20 guy to "unlock" the skill on your account, you then use a Tome to get that skill for your new character.

Monk and rt tomes are rarer becuase there aren't many mobs full of them that can be easily farmed (as oppossed to pretty much every other profession).

Sorry no ofense but I don't get this because it's possible to:
-Unlock skills with balt faction and buy them from nearest trainer
-And If I am low lvl why would I use 2k gold to learn a skill if I can learn it for 50g

Nearest trainer offers only skills from that particular campaign.

You use tomes to:
-Get skills you can't normally get at that point in the game.
-Get skills without using skill points.
-Get skills from a different chapter.

Sometimes it's cheaper to use tomes, sometimes it isn't.

-You have to have already unlocked a skill before you can learn it via tome.
-Then go learn it for 50g. It's when you have to pay 1k per skill and/or are out of skill points that you go for tomes.

Ok, let me give you a more specific example. Let's say you already have a lvl20 character that's been through Prophecies. Next you decide you want to start a new Necro, and for whatever reason, you think you like to make it a Minion Master. One of the skills you might want for an MM would be [wiki]Animate Bone Fiend[/wiki], but you can't get that skill until you make it all the way to the skill trainer in Droknar's Forge.
So, you could wait until your Necro finally gets to Drok's to buy the skill (for 1k by that time), OR, you could change your other character's secondary to Necro (temporarily), and have him buy the skill, thus "unlocking" it on your account. You could then use a Necro Tome to get that skill for your Necro while your necro is still in Ascalon.
Is that worth 1k (or 400-500g for a necro tome) to you? That's up to you.

Edit: Forget that, they seem to have changed it so you can get any unlocked skill anywhere. So, regular Tomes seem to be of very limited usefulness. However, Elite Tomes, are still useful.

Once you've unlocked a non-elite skill in a chapter, you can buy it on any character from any skill trainer in that chapter.

Of course Tomes are worth that much because people will pay for them. Logically no, there's no reason they should cost so much given their small benefit, but rich, lazy players jack the price up. In my opinion, capitalize on their stupidity: sell your tomes and get your skills the normal way.

I personally never pay 1k or more for a tome - aside from the fact that my account is UAX, there's no sense in paying someone more for a tome than it would cost to buy from a trader. Yeah there's the skill point factor, but not using one (because you ran out/haven't gotten one yet) to me is worth not paying (amount over 999g). It's pretty much a tradeoff.

I had one guy trying to convince me Rit tomes were worth 5k each. It was pretty clear that the guy was trying real hard to rip me off, if for no other reason that he was pming me pushing hard to get me to buy when I told him I don't pay over 1k for a tome of any kind whatsoever because I could spend 1k for the same thing at the trader (yes, I had skill points at the time). Finally told him to stop trying to rip people off and paid 1k at the trader - saving myself 4k and leaving him with a tome no one would buy. And, at the same time, he kept yelling his sale ad in local and wasn't getting responses either. Tells you something doesnt it?

If people are willing to pay over 1k for a tome, they don't know better or they are desperate. Monk and Rit tomes may be harder to farm, but that doesn't mean they are worth over 1k. The spirit of competition with the skill trainer is no different than trying to sell the same item someone else in the district is.

Ok I did some testing by trying to sell monk tomes for 1,5-2k to other players. Guess what responses I got back? "go back to playing WOW noob, no ty, haha they are worth 500 noob etc". And I finally got a wammo to sell me for 500g some rit tomes after hours of spamming WTB.

Quaker in that example you gave me I can buy the skill from ascalon if it's unocked.

Let me give you another example where its harder to get the skill I want. Lets say we have the same necro in ascalon and I want a skill from nightfall located in realm of torment. Now I have 2 options:
1. I can unlock the skill, buy a tome with 2k and learn the skill
2. I just wait until I reach LA and from there travel to kamadan and learn the skil.

Now what is better? getting a skill for 2k or getting many skills for normal cost? If I want the skill even faster, I just take a run to LA for 2k and from there I go to kamadan.

I guess it comes down to how badly you need said skill. If it were somehow required to have that skill to get from Ascalon to Lion's Arch, no Necromancer ever would've gotten that far prior to the introduction of tomes. If it were me, I'd say screw those guys selling non-elite tomes for 2k each and take the few measly hours to get to Lion's Arch. I cannot possibly imagine why you'd ever need a particular skill to get through the introductory parts of Prophecies.

Those guys were semi-right, by the way, a non-elite tome should almost never cost you over 500-800g. Monk tomes are higher in demand and may go for the 700-900g range, but Necromancer tomes flooded the market during the short time Urgoz Warren was solo-farmable in hard mode and should never be purchased for more than about 500g. If the people selling in Ascalon are trying to screw you, ask guild members if they can help you out, or sign onto a different character and try buying them in Lion's Arch.

I'm using tomes like crazy. I want my warrior to learn every skill in the game. (Yes, I know it's not necessary. It's just something I wanted to do, so no "you don't need to do that" flames please.)

I refuse to pay more than 900g per tome. Most tomes I'm buying for 300-500g. So far I have learned all warrior skills, all ranger skills ('cept 20) and a smattering of skills from all other professions. So far I've had no trouble finding tomes in my price range. If someone is spamming "WTS Assassin/Necro/Ranger/Warrior Tomes 500 each", I'll whisper to him and ask if I can buy 20 tomes for 7k (350 each). Most of the time they are willing to give a price break for bulk sales.

Now on the other hand, I refuse to use Elite tomes. I'd rather sell the Elite tomes I find and buy 10 cap sigs with the gold earned from the sale.

Ummm...you won't be able to buy it in Kamadan. You'll have to finish 90% of the Nightfall campaign to get to the Realm of Torment and THEN be able to buy it.

I thought that too, until someone pointed out otherwise. Once you unlock a skill in a campaign, it's available to any character, from any skill trainer in that campaign. So you'd only have to get to Kamadan. (I just checked this out, and it's true.)
